Skagway Travel - The Top Attractions
By Scott Miller

If you are planning upcoming Skagway travel, either as part of an Alaskan cruise or on a self-guided tour, you'll find there are plenty of great activities to choose from in this rustic gold rush era town.

The most popular day trip out of Skagway is a round trip into Canada's beautiful Yukon Territory on the historic White Pass Railway. The journey by train is spectacular, heading up through a mountain pass and into a region covered in pine forest, with beautiful clear turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife.

Another great option for a day trip out of Skagway is an excursion to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Take a raft trip down the pristine Chilkat River, home to the highest concentration of Bald Eagles anywhere on Earth. This truly is an amazing and unforgettable experience -- seeing dozens of eagles diving for fish is spectacular.

Of course, you don't even have to leave the town of Skagway to have a wonderful time. The town itself is situated in an amazing location at the end of a fjord, surrounded by peaks that are capped in snow much of the year.

The main street in Skagway has a unique western frontier feel, with stores and restaurants located in authentic buildings dating back to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1899-1900.

A short ride from downtown Skagway is the location of the former town of Dyea, which was the landing point for many of the would-be gold miners seeking their fortunes in the Klondike. A 1.5 mile hike through the former town site provides both a fascinating look at the historical ruins and a chance to see incredible bald eagles, beautiful wildflowers, and dense, lush rain forest.

Skagway travel can be both an adventure and a trip back in time. One thing is for sure -- you'll never forget your visit to this amazing little town.
