Located ideally in Minneapolis, Minnesota of the United States, the Walker Art Centre is a unique and modern art centre. It is rated among the country's 'big five' museums of contemporary art.
The Walker Art Centre is located right next to the famous Minneapolis Sculpture Garden which is one of the biggest urban sculpture parks in the Unites States.
Incepted in 1927, the Walker Art Centre started off as merely a public art gallery. It was only during the 1940's that the art centre started to think seriously about modern art. It all began with Mrs. Gilbert Walker gaining acquisition of world famous works by the then renowned artists as well as works by the legendary Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti and many others.
The New Walker Art Centre opened its doors to the public in April 2005. The new art centre has almost doubled the size from what it was at the very beginning. It incorporated improved indoor as well as outdoor facilities and the opportunity for the public to explore more of its resources. The new building was designed by the well known and prize-winning Herzog and de Meuron which is a Swiss architectural firm.
Set on a 17 acre urban campus, the Walker Art Centre even features a restaurant and a theatre that can accommodate 385 people. Known for its multidisciplinary facets, the arts centre is involved in visual arts, film and video, performing arts, educational plus community programs, design as well as new media.
The extensive collection features work of famous artists such as Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, Matthew Barney, Roy Lichtenstein, David Bowes and Nam June Paik.
The outdoor facilities at the art centre are available for rent for special occasions such as weddings, artful dinners and meetings.
